General Information

A new commuter car park was required to be constructed to provide approximately 130 car park spaces including additional disabled parking spaces, located south west of the existing station commuter car park adjacent to the Pacific Highway. A number of retaining wall alternatives were investigated for the fill embankment stabilisation. These included both reinforced concrete cantilevered walls and reinforced soil walls options utilising precast concrete panel or segmental block using both extensible for inextensible soil reinforcement. One major concern was the adopted system had to cater for stray current affects in relation to the adjacent electrical railway line. After major consideration of all alternatives the preferred system was that of the Anchor Landmark & Miragrid XT Reinforced Soil System which ticked all the boxes from design through to construction and OHS considerations.

The Landmark System represents a breakthrough in reinforced wall engineering. Combining innovative thinking with time-tested engineering principles, Anchor Wall Systems has developed the next-generation segmental retaining wall system. A few advantages of the system being: positive geogrid connection with the facing (extruded polymer Lock bar); The lock bars are inserted into the aligned channels in a course of blocks and subsequently rotate within the channel to provide a positive mechanical connection between the block and the geogrid soil reinforcement; superior overturning and block to block shear resistance; flexibility to be used with both soil and rock anchored solutions; faster installation times without additional costs of scaffolding.

An integral part of the design also had to cater for a future detention tank; drop pits and reinforced concrete wall/integrated crash barrier/palisade security fence arrangement at the top of the wall. Bridging slabs were used of existing services in associated with the use of No-Fines concrete where hand compaction required could not be achieved.

Synergy Civil Pty Ltd was contracted by TIDC to project manage the entire project from start to finish. As part of this project Retaining Solutions Design Construct scope of works included: the design of the reinforced soil walls to NSW RTA Specification R57 “Design of Reinforced Soil Walls” ; supply & installation of: Anchor Landmark full height blocks, Landmark half height blocks, Landmark foundation blocks, capping units, extruded polymer Lock-Bar, Miragrid polyester geogrid soil reinforcement, 20mm drainage aggregate, 100mm dia socked and slotted drainage aggregate pipe, excavation & installation of gravel encapsulated chimney drains at the rear of the reinforced fill zone, and spreading & compaction of the imported select backfill (quarry crusher dust) used within the reinforced fill zone.

The works were carried out to a very tight construction programme on time, within budget and most importantly satisfying Synergy Civil and TIDC strict project guidelines. Retaining Solutions produces with every wall complete, full quality documentation e.g Inspection & Test Plans, Daily Quality Verification Checklists in addition to detailed daily site diaries detailing operations and overall checks carried out over the duration of the wall construction from levelling pad placement to capping unit installation. This level of documentation proving to be both beneficial to both developer/owner and Retaining Solutions.
