General Information

Located 46km south of Nowra, the realignment of Conjola Mountain involved the upgrading the section of the Pacific Highway between Bendalong Road and the northern approaches of the new Conjola Creek Bridge, This stage included an additional northbound lane to allow for overtaking on the steep section of the highway, the provision of a medium level barrier and construction of two underpasses for improved access for local residents. BMD Constructions was awarded the contract and works involved: clearing, approx 200,000m3 bulk earthworks, 2.3km new pavements, 120m long new concrete bridge, BEBO arch, RCBC and four (4) reinforced soil panel walls totalling 6,225m2 face area.

Reinforced soil wall applications included two piled bridge abutments and two road widening’s. The project was located in very difficult terrain which required the use of both rectangular and trapezoidal reinforced soil zones. Both the RECO TerraPlus® and VSL VSoL® reinforced soil systems were adopted for the works. Construction was staged on all walls due to narrow work area; difficult terrain and associated stability concerns; traffic control issues while still enabling foundation works and other trades (soil nailing etc ) to work concurrently and still achieve key program milestones.

Keys designs issues were solved using both panel systems namely: varying foundation conditions using in-situ concrete footings founded on rock. Poor foundations were excavated and replaced with stabilised backfill and chimney drains were used at the rear of all Reinforced Earth™ zones. The walls also had to be designed to cater for modified type F crash barriers located at the top of each wall.

Retaining Solutions scope of works involved the installation of: panels; mesh & strip soil reinforcement; gravel encapsulated drains; cement stabilised medium to foundation treatment; placement, spreading and compaction of imported select backfill (DGS) up to underside of bridge abutments and crash barrier parapets in addition to surveyor conformance of smz layers which was used within the reinforced fill zone/wedge for both bridge abutment and road widening walls. Plant hire was also engaged by BMD Construction for bulk earthworks operations.
