General Information

The project involved the construction of 52.1m long & 16.1m wide super-T girder bridge, approach roadworks, Reinforced Earth™ wall abutments taking full loads applied from bridge abutments and crash barrier parapet arrangement, including drainage, pavement, guardrail linemarking and creek bed rehabilitation.

The system adopted for the reinforced true bridge abutment walls and approaches was the RECO square shaped TerraPlus® precast concrete facing panel system. Please note all bridge abutments loadings and crash barrier loads were to be taken by the adopted system.  Another specific requirement of this project was that the walls were to be designed for a probable maximum flood event full to fill height of reinforced fill zone. This involved the design and installation of gravel drains to the rear of both the concrete panel and reinforced fill zones.

This project experienced many challenges namely: limited access for construction of both abutments (panel deliveries were dictated by construction progress as each lift was completed; difficult terrain meaning footing steps occurred every 2m in lengths with footings stepping up approx 2:1 grade over the length of each approach wall; constructing all approach walls on radii and bridging over insitu culverts; limited access for backfilling of reinforced fill zone, i.e all six (6) walls were backed via loader and bobcat combination due to steep entry and exit ramps; founding of all walls onto rock foundations required different methods of base row panel support and bracing.

Retaining Solutions scope of works involved the installation of: concrete footings; panels; corner units; soil reinforcement; gravel encapsulated drains; cement stabilised medium to foundation treatment; underside of bridge abutments and crash barrier parapets in addition to surveyor conformance +/- 10mm; and placement, spreading and compaction of imported select backfill (crusher dust) which was used within the reinforced fill zone for both bridge abutment and approach walls.
