General Information

This segment of highway has been bypassed by the Halcombe Hill deviation, and has been the scene of several crashes over the years and in recent times some very serious ones. Work to realign the New England Highway north of Aberdeen commenced in June 2006 and was completed in 2007, and involved a new rail overbridge over the main north railway, widened pavements with additional lanes, approach fills, overlay of existing pavement, tie-ins, culvert and access tracks at Halcombe Hill near Aberdeen, 14.73km to 16.390 km North of Muswellbrook, in the Upper Hunter Shire. The old highway alignment has become a local access road. Ridge Consolidated Pty Ltd was engaged as the successful principal contractor.

The geological data for Singleton indicated that the proposed reinforced walls were underlain with undifferentiated Permian siltstone, sandstone and conglomerate of the Maitland Group with overlying quaternary gravel, sand silt and clay on the lower slope and floodplains.

The system adopted for the reinforced true bridge abutment walls and approaches was the RECO square shaped TerraPlus® precast concrete facing panel system. Please note all bridge abutments loadings and crash barrier loads were to be taken by the adopted system. The reinforced soil walls were constructed directly adjacent to the railway track corridor and all staff required associated RISI training.

Retaining Solutions scope of works involved the installation of: concrete footings; panels; corner units; REHas soil reinforcement; sample tests strips; gravel encapsulated drains; cement stabilised medium to foundation treatment to underside of bridge sill beam; placement /compaction/profiling of batters directly above wing walls; placement/compaction/conformance of 1000mm thick cement stabilised layer directly beneath reinforced concrete sill beam; placement, spreading and compaction of imported select backfill (crusher dust) used within the reinforced fill zone.
