General Information

Boggabri Coal mine is located approximately 17km northeast of Boggabri in the Gunnedah Basin, New South Wales.

The Daracon Group was awarded the contract by Nepean Conveyors and Idemitsu P/L to upgrade the rail loading facility at the Boggabri Coal Mine. The mine is currently expanding production from 1.5MPTA to 4MPTA and the coal handling infrastructure is consequently being improved to handle these requirements. Coal from the pit is loaded into rear dump trucks and transported to the ROM crusher pad. Coal is then crushed and loaded into B-double trucks for transport to the rail loadout facility via a private 17 km haul road. The coal is then railed to the Port of Newcastle for export. As part of these works Retaining solutions was subcontracted to construct the RECO Terramet® elliptical steel panel Reinforced Earth™ retaining wall. This will provide the bulk structure for the side tipping truck unloading facility into the feeder chamber.

Due to the short design life of the project the RECO Terramet® System was used, a galvanised semi-elliptical light weight steel facing panel. Cost effective to transport, easily and rapidly erected to suit Daracon’s construction program.

The project involved the design & construction of a 8.5 m high Terramet® elliptical steel panel Reinforced Earth™ wall adjacent/ over an Atlantic Civil Galvanized multi-plate steal arch. The wall was required to support a uniform vertical live load surcharge equivalent to a “Smith side tip Quad-Quad B double operating on the unloading slab on top of the structure.

Retaining Solutions scope of works involved the installation of: Terramet® panels; REHas soil reinforcement; temporary handrail system; gravel & geotextile encapsulated chimney drains; spreading and compaction of imported select backfill (DGS) surrounding arch and up to underside of dump slab.
