General Information

The project involved the widening and realignment of the Great Western Highway between Leura and Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. The upgrading of the infrastructure in this area dramatically improved travel times for motorists as well as providing a safer road environment for all motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. McMahon Contractors were awarded the contract by the NSW RTA and their scope of works included relocation of existing utilities, construction of various types of retaining structures, drainage, pavement and finishing works. Retaining structures were required both sides of the highway, including the adjacent rail corridor. Retaining Solutions was engaged for the installation & supervision of the Reinforced Earth™ Panel (RECO System) and Segmental Walls (Allan Block & Miragrid XT System).

The system adopted for the Reinforced Earth™ wall at the Leura Showground was the RECO hexagonal shaped TerraClass® precast concrete facing panel system. This particular facing system has been used on many RTA projects throughout the Blue Mountains with an exposed “quartz aggregate” horizontal rib finish.

This particular wall had many challenges namely: constructing the wall on a 5 degree inclination to vertical with the tight tolerances on the R58 Specification 0/+5mm per m height; constructing the wall with concave and convex radii; “varying weather” conditions experienced in the Blue Mountains region e.g heavy rainfall and infrequent showers, hail, sunshine, mist and sometimes snow; tight access for backfilling logistics using truck and dog placement for spreading & compaction of imported select backfill.

Retaining Solutions also installed the precast coping units on top of the wall in addition to the insitu reinforced concrete support beam behind the facing units. This wall presented many challenges and once again proved Retaining Solutions staff’s expertise in Reinforced Earth™ wall construction and project management.
