General Information

The New England Highway project commenced in mid-2003 and involved a 3.2km section upgrade of the highway. Following its upgrade during the 1980’s it was once again realigned during 2005 to further decrease the number of accidents and to incorporate the safety concerns of the community. The project was provided a $6million fund by the NSW Government for the construction of the new highway.

The Devils Pinch re-alignment was located approximately 30 kilometres north of Armidale, New South Wales and is part of the New England Highway upgrade.

Fulton Hogan was awarded the contract by the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority as the main contractor for the realignment works. As part of the scope of works, a fauna underpass was also to be constructed to allow for a safe passageway for wildlife in the area.

The project involved the design and construction of large scale gabion walls with a maximum height of 10m, spanning 178m long and supporting a Bebo concrete arch. Due to the maximum height of the wall, a combination of both gravity walls and soil reinforced walls were adopted. HDPE geogrids were used behind the gabion facing as the soil reinforcement due to their inherent connection strength between the gabions and long-term durability. Stainless steel hog rings were used to increase productivity and strengthen connections between the gabion cage & HDPE geogrids.

Retaining Solutions scope of works involved the design of the mass gravity and gabion faced reinforced soil structures in accordance with AS4678. Nviroscope was the engaged gabion installation subcontractor.
