General Information

The Southern Sydney Freight Line project is occurring throughout the southern areas of Sydney including the areas of Bankstown, Fairfield, Liverpool and Campbelltown. The project involved the construction of a dedicated freight line connecting the southern to Sydney freight terminals and ports. This projects aims to remove the current operational constraints during peak hours between passengers and freight trains, eliminate the effects of potential disruptions to the passenger network and to reduce the road traffic experienced by commuters. This project was divided into three stages, with various works at each location.

Leightons Construction was awarded the contract for stage three which commenced late 2011 and consisted of the completion of the new freight line from Leightonfield to

Glenfield junction and the final commission signaling of the Sydney Southern Freight Link and the construction of earthworks, drainage, bridges, culverts, retaining walls, access roads and landscaping.

Retaining Solutions were involved in the installation of the keystone block walls to “Veneer: to previously built in-situ precast concrete walls RW150/RW151 to make them more aesthetically pleasing to the residents. Scope of works included installation of: cement stabilised sand bedding layer (max 40mm thickness) prior to placement of KeySteel blocks on a 1:10 lean back; drilling and fixing galvanised N12 bars (into RW150/151 to create connection between insitu wall and KeySteel wall (via use of Hilti HIT-HT150 injection mortar with a minimum embedment of 100mm). The N12 90 bent cog bars were spacing 800mm vertically and 915mm horizontal spacing along length of wall; installation of No-Fines concrete medium to fill voids between both walls and filling voids within KeySteel blocks; drainage outlets @ 20mcts though facing units above finished grade level and front of wall; fixing of keystone capping units (including cutting where necessary) to top course of blocks using mortar bed with iron edging.


Construction

An important aspect of this project was the materials handling aspect within a very tight corridor. Access scaffold also had to be used for when works exceed 1.2m in height for all operations carried out from block placement to drilling holes into in-situ walls; to placing No-fines Concrete and finally capping unit installation.

Construction of this wall was completed in January 2013 taking approximately 2 months to complete.

Retaining Solutions produces with every wall complete, full quality documentation including Inspection & Test Plans, Daily Quality Verification Checklists and detailed daily site diaries detailing operations and overall checks carried out over the duration of the wall construction from levelling pad placement to capping unit installation. This level of documentation proved to be beneficial to both the developer/owner and Retaining Solutions.
