General Information

WestLink M7 is a 40km motorway through Western Sydney (Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Fairfield & Liverpool), linking the M2, M4 and M5 motorways, saving motorists significant amounts of travel time. It also included separate off-road shared cycle/pedestrian pathway.

ALJV (Abigroup Leighton Joint Venture) were responsible for the successful execution and delivery of the project 8 months ahead of programmed completion date. At the time of its completion it was the largest motorway constructed in an urban area in Australia. The project included: 144 bridges; 17 interchanges; 38 underpasses; noise mounds and noise walls; Reinforced Earth™ panel walls and KeySteel® segmental masonry reinforced soil walls and in excess of 15million tonnes of earth moved.

Retaining Solutions works involved installation of approx 8 piled bridge abutments and approach ramps utilising the KeySteel® System @ 5degree layback. Scope of works included installation of : KeySteel Keystone Compac units – both “Split” & “Smooth” flushface finishes were incorporated into the wall elevation; KeyStrip steel ladder soil reinforcements (9mm, 10mm & 11mm dia); drainage separation geotextile; fibreglass alignment pins; galvanised KeyStrip steel ladders and steel connecting pins; 20mm drainage aggregate, 100mm dia socked and slotted drainage aggregate pipe;

No-Fines concrete @ 90-degree corners; sands/cement mix surrounding drainage pits; polyester geogrid soil reinforcement; capping units; and placement, conditioning, cartage, placement, spreading & compaction of the imported select backfill (crushed sandstone from Cross City Tunnel & Parramatta Rail Link Project) used within the reinforced fill zone.

Another key feature of this project was that an external scaffold to the wall face could not be used for fall protection due to tight boundary constraints, the alternative utilised an innovative fall from height system using vertical/horizontal scaffold poles secured internally to prevent workers falling from height during both block placement and hand compaction operations.

The works were carried out to a very tight construction programme on time, within budget and most importantly satisfying ALJV & RTA strict OHS guidelines. Retaining Solutions produces with every wall complete, full quality documentation e.g Inspection & Test Plans, Daily Quality Verification Checklists in addition to detailed daily site diaries detailing operations and overall checks carried out over the duration of the wall construction from levelling pad placement to capping unit installation.
